Ford is recalling Ford Escapes model year 2001 through 2004 with V6 engines and cruise control.  They are recalling them because of a problem where a speed control cable can become stuck.  This can cause unintended continued acceleration.  When the gas pedal is pressed all the way to the floor, a cruise control cable can become stuck, the problem can happen even if cruise control is not on.  If it does happen, the car will not go slower even after the driver releases the gas pedal.

The recall is planned to start August 6.  Ford is advising drivers of these cars not to push the gas pedal close to the floor until the car has been fixed.
