Here is a link to an article about a lack of federal regulations over credit reporting agencies that makes it very difficult to correct damaging mistakes in your credit report. The article discusses how 30,000 complaints filed with the Federal Trade Commission over the span of 30 months were analyzed. The complaints, alleging violations of the Fair Credit Reporting Act by Equifax, Experian and TransUnion, document how consumers across the country have failed to get even some obvious mistakes corrected. These mistakes include wrong birthdates, names, accounts that aren't yours, car loans that had been paid off that were reported as repossessions, and credit cards showing up as delinquent payments that had been paid off.
